  • Bamboo rods.
  • Any rods or reels from Redington, Temple Fork Outfitters, Echo, White River, Fenwick.

How do I pack a rod for shipping?

Trust us - you're not the only one with this question. It's one of the most frequent inquiries we get from customers. Fly fishing rods are long, delicate and valuable, which makes shipping them a bit of a head scratcher.

Here's the good news: the combination of a modern rod tube and a good rod sock does an excellent job protecting your fly rod in transit.

This is how we pack rods for shipping to our customers:

  1. Find a long, thin box that your rod tube can sit inside with a bit of space left over all around it. 3"x3"x38" works for most 4-piece trout rods. 3"x3"x49" fits most spey rods. You could also use a cardboard tube, but boxes work great and are usually less expensive.
  2. Put your rod in its rod sock, roll it up and insert it into the rod tube. Securely close the lid of the rod tube.
  3. Place the rod tube in the box. Pack the space around the rod tube with enough filler material to ensure the tube won't move inside the box during transit. Make especially sure you have filler between each end of the rod tube and the bottom/top of the box. Our filler of choice is balled-up packing paper or newsprint. Bunched up plastic grocery bags also work well. Please avoid using foam peanuts if possible - they are impossible to recycle.
  4. Once you've got the rod and filler packed into the box, seal it up with packing tape. If you printed your shipping label on an ink jet or laser printer, make sure the label is completely covered with clear packing tape to protect it from damage in transit.

If you're shipping a rod without a rod tube and rod sock, you'll need to use a stiff cardboard tube inside the box to keep the rod safe during transit.

  1. Wrap each section of rod separately in packing paper and insert into the cardboard tube.
  2. Seal both ends of the tube with packing tape.
  3. Follow the instructions from Steps 3 and 4 above.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns about packing your rod for shipping. We will be happy to help.
